High performance metal roofs in Ontario are amazing. They last long, are able to withstand some pretty tough weather, and have been used for decades as a cost-effective alternative to traditional asphalt. Installing a metal roof on a house can present some challenges though. For those who wish to install their own metal roof, it’s going to take some work. Once you get the hang of it, we’re sure it won’t seem so complicated.
Get your roof measurement
Prior to buying, get your roof’s measurements so you know how many panels you need to buy. Don’t estimate. Get up there and measure length by width. If there are any questions about how many panels your final measurement equates, speak with a representative.
Follow the instruction manual
Above all else, when you receive your metal roof panels in Ontario, hang onto the manufacturer’s instructions. These are imperative to ensuring your roof is properly installed. When panels have not been interlocked correctly, that could result in leaks.
Attach safety anchors
Follow the instructions and install safety anchors on which you can connect a safety harness. When installing your metal roof, safety should always come first. Most harnesses secure around the chest. Be sure that the harness is properly worn and strapped.
Start at the bottom left or right
When beginning the metal roof installation process, start at either the bottom left or bottom right. Hook the bottom of the metal roof panel to the corner and fasten it securely. Always start in a corner and work your way out from there.
Ensure panels are properly locked
Make sure your panels are properly interlocked and hooked. After the hook is in, you should be able to slide everything into place until it locks. Continue this process with every panel until your reach the edge of the roof.
Cut panels to the appropriate length
If you haven’t received precut metal panels, you will need to use cutters to chop down a panel to the appropriate length to pair it to the edge of the roof. Be sure to speak with your supplier about this. They may recommend an alternative to cutting the panels yourself.
Know that it may take a few days
Getting the panels into place can take a few days so take your time and don’t rush. It’s much more important for every panel to be properly interlocked than it is to get the job done in a fast fashion. To this point, hiring a helper that you trust to work alongside you can help get things done quicker without having to sacrifice quality on the job.
Depending on the features of your roof and what panels need to accommodate in design, there may be other considerations to make. Before you make a purchasing decision, if you’re unsure, speak with your supplier. Post-purchase and before you get started on the roof, be sure that all your tools are good to go, nothing’s malfunctioning or broken, and that all the supplies you need have arrived. Installing a metal roof on a house in Ontario takes a lot of time and labor. All in all, be sure to take it slow, play it smart, and do it right.
